The story of The Shore
Andrew, a fisherman, follows his missing daughter to a forbidden island where Lovecraft's old gods wait under the water. The story of The Shore, spoiler-free.
Andrew
Andrew is a fisherman and a father. When his daughter Ellie disappears, the trail ends at a remote island abandoned by humanity. He sails there alone. The game is seen entirely through his eyes, and his voice, played by Brandon Fague, carries the story through the notes and memories he finds.
The island
The island was lived on once. There are wrecked boats on the rocks, a lighthouse, empty villages and ruins, and notes left by the people who came before him. Most of what Andrew learns about Ellie comes from these pages, and from the things the island chooses to show him.
The old gods
The Shore is built on the mythology of H. P. Lovecraft. Many of his best-known creations appear in person, Dagon among them, and they do not stay on the horizon. Under the island something ancient is changing the world above it, and the closer Andrew gets to Ellie the less certain he is of his own mind.
Andrew is not defenceless. An artifact of the old gods lets him strike back at what hunts him, at a cost the game makes him pay.
Where the idea came from
Ares Dragonis started The Shore in 2019 as a solo project and built the island alone for almost a year before a programmer and a composer joined. Read how it was made.
